And now for something completely different. Race #3 is coming up quickly now. This time I am heading to Connecticut to run the 2nd Annual Charity Challenge Flashback 5K at Mohegan Sun. This is not your standard run-of-the-mill 5k. The party begins at 11:59pm this Saturday night, which happens to be Halloween. Race check-in time begins at midnight. The race begins at 1:50am. This is also the night the clocks get set back an hour. The clocks officially fall back at 2:00am. So, if the race starts at 1:50am, and it takes me around 30 minutes to finish, I should cross the finish line around 1:20am. For some reason, I now have “Back in Time” by Huey Lewis and the News in my head!
Another reason this race is different is that it supports not one, but two charities. When I signed up, I distributed my donation equally.
The first is Time To Heal, which is an upcoming not for profit organization which will help people who struggle with addiction. Their goal is to raise enough money to open our doors within five years by creating a place for people with substance abuse and gambling issues to escape the prison of addiction, emerge from our program completely healed and rejoin society and their families with the ability to live life fully,love and respect themselves and therefore embrace the world around them.
The second charity is Safe Futures. Safe Futures, is a place where lives are saved, hope is restored, and the future is changed for those impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault in southeastern Connecticut. Founded in 1976, as the Women’s Center of Southeastern Connecticut, Safe Futures began as an information and referral service for women entering the workforce. Today, Safe Futures operates two 24-hour hotlines, an emergency shelter, and a transitional living program for families working to rebuild lives shattered by domestic violence or sexual assault. Safe Futures also provides counseling and advocacy, case management, court advocacy, support groups, and educational programs for schools and community groups. All 21 towns in New London County are served by the agency.
